Coca Cola Print

Coca-cola project located in Sindang Pakuwon village, Cimanggung sub-district, Sumedang district. The village is flanked by Cimande and Citarik rivers, within the sub-watershed of Citarik - Citarum in the eastern part of Bandung. Sindang Pakuwon is a typical growing sub-urban area surrounded by rapid urban development within the last 20 years, which resulted in high population growth especially from thousands of moving-in outsiders. These developments also create high demands for lands, increased local market activities, boarding houses for factory workers, new housing complexes and more shops along the main roads of Bandung - Tasikmalaya. The village covers 125,000 hectares and is divided into 4 sub-villages (dusuns): Cibureleng, Parakan Muncang, Cikalama, and Sindang Kasih.

Land ownership is mostly individual, despite the fact that many has also been sold to outsiders and factories for their operating expansion.  Many or agricultural lands also belong to outsiders.  Soil fertility is degrading due to possible impacts of dry seasons and or industrial wastes.  During the rainy season, most of agricultural areas are flooded.

Clean water availability
During the rainy season water is abundant yet to be wasted in a form of floods, while in the dry season people experience water shortages.  Ground water is presently available and extracted through wells.  During rainy seasons these wells are flooded and become unpottable.  During dry seasons, these wells also dry up. The surface water (river) can only be used for agricultural purposes. The channeled water from the Cipulus and Cimande springs is also significantly reduced in volume during the dry seasons.  Several water pumps are available and owned by well off individuals.  Presently, local community feels that water scarcity has become one of the biggest problems, besides sanitation and waste management.  Therefore, the program needs to put water availability as an important key issue.

Village sanitation
In addition to the water scarcity, sanitation also becomes a complicated issue and at the same time creates serious problems to the local community.  The limited amount of low quality water available during the dry season becomes the source of local diseases, hygienic problems, and potentially create inevitable horizontal conflicts.  Degree of community’s understanding about a comprehensive sanitation is still very low, which is reflected by the scattered and poorly collected wastes of local market, factories, cattle and domestic; as well as indiscriminated places for defecation.  These sanitation problems are exacerbated by lack of supporting government’s regulations and budgeting.

The objectives of the project are:

1) The emergence of the understanding and the willingness of local community to maintain their health and environment through a cleaner behavior change;

2) The emergence of community initiatives to establish community-based sanitation systems, which include: provision and management of clean water; construction, operation and maintenance of communal septic tanks (CST) and hydram pumps for supporting clean water provision system as a pilot activity; and

3) Promotion of community and media supports and contributions in disseminating information and knowledge regarding clean and healthy behaviors to community at large.

The above three project objectives will be achieved through the following three primary activities:

1) Community conventions, focus group discussions, and gatherings which are aimed at building consensus in identified common problems on sanitation, health and environment; as well as obtaining joint community commitments on ways to resolve the perceived problems. These consensus and commitments are reflected into a community mapping and land-use planning;

2) Construct two pilot WCs using communal septic tanks (CSTs) and appropriate technology applications for improving surface water quality through community collaboration and participation, and

3) Dissemination of success stories to community at large as well as relevant local government offices.
