Solar Energy Cetak

Solar energy technologies utilizes energy derived from the sun to produce heat, light, hot water and electricity which can be used for homes, commercial and industrial sectors.

YBUL uses the following solar applications:

  • Solar Cooker: cooking technology that utilizes solar energy
  • Solar Dryer: drain agricultural products or crops with tunnel driers or vertical driers

Solar Cooker

The solar cooker that YBUL introduces at rural village level is a small type of solar cooker which is designed for household needs. It is especially suitable for households where firewood for cooking is hard to find, such as villages at coastal lines, fishermen and people who live far from bushes, such as those who live in the periphery of towns. One or two hours (on a dry day) are sufficient to cook meals for the day. The approach for introducing solar cookers is to prepare the community for building and using the system which is made of locally available building material.

Solar cookers of the ‘family type’ were installed at Kupang Coastal area for fishermen, who find it very difficult to collect fire wood for cooking. People were taught how to design the system and how to manufacture it themselves.

Solar Dryer

Solar dryers are intended for drying agricultural produce such as coffee beans, cacao beans, banana chips, copra etcetera. This system is suitable for individual household or for communal use such a village use. The result is a hygienically dried product.

There are two types that are promoted by YBUL: tunnel dryers and vertical dryers. In this technology application,YBUL cooperates with CREATA of IPB, Bogor.

YBUL, under the sponsorship of the USAID and in cooperation with CREATA, has made use of the research and development unit at the Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB), designed and installed solar dryer systems for coffee beans at Lintongnihuta, Tapanuli, Sumatra, with a capacity of 2 tons per batch and two units of solar dryer for cocoa beans at Sarulla, South Tapanuli, Sumatra, each with a capacity of 750 kg per batch.

Photo Voltaic Systems

YBUL concentrates on cross cutting issues when it comes to photovoltaic system applications, due to the high cost of the technology when used only for electricity.

Solar Home Systems is a small PV system, sufficient to provide for very basic needs of electricity, such as lighting, radio, and a TV set. It can also be modified to include a telephone set if required. A small grid for communal use is also possible.

In this case some solar powered telephone had been installed and operated on the island of Nusa Tenggara Timur. These PV systems have enabled the rural people to communicate with people in towns and cities, to say more than just hallo to colleagues and friends as well as family members, but also to find out the spot price of economic commodities, such as agricultural produce and fish caught by fishermen.
